A reminder that Fairmont Area Schools will be hosting a public Anne Frank Sapling Planting Ceremony on Thursday, May 29, 2025, at 1:00 PM at the Fairmont High School Performing Arts Center. The sapling, grown from the chestnut tree that stood outside the Secret Annex where Anne Frank wrote her diary, symbolizes hope, resilience, and remembrance.
Fairmont is one of only 16 sites in the United States selected to receive a sapling, joining locations such as the U.S. Capitol and the United Nations. This rare honor was made possible by 11-year-old Natalie Flaherty, whose passion for history and justice inspired the successful application.
The event will feature remarks from Dr. Lauren Bairnsfather, CEO of the Anne Frank Center USA, as well as school leaders, students, and musical and literary tributes.

Jim Marushin from the Martin County Historical Society gave a presentation about the Native Americans that lived in the Fairmont area. This was a collaboration with art department teacher Sherry Carlmark and the 7th grade dreamcatcher unit. There was a lot of critical thinking about how the Native Americans lived then and how it is different or the same now. 7th graders learned about how the Native Americans lived according to the seasons, were nomadic, styles of crafts and even games they played.
