Musician working with student in the performing arts center

Through an incredible opportunity from the Fairmont Opera House, the Creative Writing classes at Fairmont High School collaborated with professional musicians and songwriters this week. We Are The Willows is a Minneapolis based music group. Their recent album is filled with songs written by lead singer Peter Miller that feature the letters his grandparents wrote back and forth to each other during World War II.

The group performed a mini concert of their work for the classes and then spent three days highlighting the skills and strategies of songwriting. They worked lyrically with the students, writing silly songs to break down their walls of fear and uncertainty, then they helped inspire them to write more serious ones. They also worked musically with the students, helping our student vocalists and musicians create the soundtracks that would eventually accompany their lyrics.
